Architecture in Conversation with Landscape

The Journal7 min read

The best buildings in wild places do not compete with the view. They frame it, shelter you from it, and then step aside.

Every AURELIA retreat begins with the same question: what was here before? The answer shapes everything — the materials, the height of the roofs, the direction the rooms face.

Materials from close by

On the coast that means lime plaster and local stone. In the mountains, dry-stone walls and timber. In the desert, rammed earth that shares the colour of the dunes around it.

An open living space with linen sofas, timber floors and large windows
Linen, oak and natural light.

A building should be the quietest thing in the landscape — and the warmest.

Light as a material

Openings are placed with care. Small windows where the sun is fierce; wide glass where the view is gentle. Light moves through the rooms over the day, and the rooms are designed to be read by it.

Fictional editorial written for the AURELIA concept project.
