- Rammed-earth walls and narrow openings keep the heat at bay. Courtyards hold water, shade and the cool of the evening.

- Rise before the sun. Rest through the bright hours. Gather at dusk, and stay out long after dark to watch the sky fill.

- Rammed earth, palm-fibre screens, raw linen and brass that darkens with time.
